Finger Lakes Sunday Drive Near Watkins Glen and Starkey

It was a beautiful and sunny afternoon here along Seneca Lake near 1922 Starkey House Bed & Breakfast Inn. The previous weekend storm that hit the Northeast only dropped about six inches here, in our area of  Finger Lakes Wine Country.

Just thought I would share some of the spots I drove by on my way, with camera in hand, down to Glenora to see the falls, and Montour Falls to see the powerful She-qua-ga falls.

The Glenora is a secret spot I like to tell my guests about because of the natural beauty to be found there . . . the waterfall. Guests have taken their bicycles down Rt. 14 to see it and the little hamlet (point) of Glenora that is situated right on Seneca Lake. It is located about three miles south of the Starkey House and behind Glenora Wine Cellars.

As I stopped on the bridge just over the canal, I was able to get a photo through the trees, of the frozen falls. There was a swift movement of water that could be seen through a break in the ice. Breathtaking!
Now, if you want to see an all powerful and mighty waterfall it would be She-qua-ga, a name given by the Seneca tribe of Native Americans that inhabited the entire region. This is a late afternoon photo so the sun has nearly set in the background. The trestle at the top is incredibly high and depicts just how far up waters originate. It is almost frozen solid but with a break from the middle unveiling tumbling waters from within!
Guests from all over the world report that this waterfall and the falls in Watkins Glen State Park are among the top of any natural wonders they have seen.

Driving along Seneca Lake is a lovely ride. It was a deep marine blue today and against the white snowy background was a site to see.

I always appreciate seeing the vineyards as they sleep in the deep of winter. Spring will come to awaken them for another year of great wine production along the wine trail.
